Paper Umbrella Tutorial

Paper umbrellas are easier to make than they look. Remember folding fans when you were a child? This is similar, but smaller and more detailed. Follow the steps to make a stamped and colored paper umbrella, then step out and experiment with the basic idea.

SUPPLIES

  • Plain white paper
  • Circle punch (2 1/2″ scalloped circle shown)
  • Scissors
  • Colored pencils
  • Stamp (Layers of Color Architectural Blocks shown)
  • Ink pad

  • Stamp each section until completely stamped.
  • Use whole or cut in half and make two.

  • Color stamped image as desired (as shown: colored pencil with marker on edge).
  • Fold like a fan, alternating mountain and valley folds all radiating from center of straight edge.

  • For 3-D umbrella, glue only straight edges to artwork.
  • Decorate or color inside of umbrella if whole circle was used (as shown).
  • Try different sizes and edging with decorative scissors.
  • Experiment with crepe paper, printed napkin, paper doily or book pages.

I am inspired to make a card with these features because Laura lays out all the steps for those of us who are beginners! The supplies are not out of the ordinary, either…I have almost everything needed right here at home is my container of art/craft supplies! Thank you, Laura, for adding color and an awareness of beauty in my life! Blessings, Marjorie

I just love your umbrella. How generous of you to share how you created it, Laura!

How cute this is! I’m a Stampin’ Up! Independent Demonstrator and SU! sells a scallop punch in our current 2008 Spring/Summer Catalog. I was trying to come up with an umbrella made with the punch and just decided to check online and see if anyone else has already done this…found this site! Thanks so much-I may take you up on the challenge and will post a link to this site…come visit me!
