HOUSE SHADOW BOX CARD TUTORIAL

Designed by Laura Kirste Campbell

This card  is 4 1/2″ X 5 1/2″. It stands up as a 3-D card and then flattens to fit into a standard size A-6 envelope.

Detail
Detail Showing Insert

It looks complicated but the construction is simple. There are three layers to this card, Front, Back and Insert (picket fence). Each layer is decorated separately then assembled together with glue.

House
House Shadow Box Card Pattern

Pattern is cut from 8 1/2″ X 11″ cardstock.

Cut
Cut Out House Pattern

Cut one of each Front, Back and Insert. Insert can be cut from different cardstock.

Fold
Fold Edges

Score and fold edges of Front and Back at 1/2″ marks. Front has “Valley” folds. Back has alternating “Valley” and “Mountain” folds. Note: Both have “Valley” folds at the base of the roof.

Cut
Cut Front Opening

Cut opening in Front. I used 3 1/2″ circle. You can use any shape, just keep it within 4″ for stability.

DECORATE the outside of the Front and the inside of the Back before assembling.  Remember that the card is 3-D so you can add folding paper objects to the inside (as long as the object folds flat when card is flattened). Assemble Front and Back as shown with glue or double-sided tape. I use fast drying PVC paper glue for strength.

This top view shows the assembled Front and Back. The fan folds enable the card to flatten to fit into an envelope.

Measure
Measure Insert To Fit

Measure Insert (and trim edges if necessary) to fit inside card.

Insert
Insert

DECORATE Insert before attaching to card. Glue just the edges (either front or back). I prefer to put glue on the back of the insert because this secures it to the center of the card. Picture shows glue on the front so you can see that you should apply the glue to stay within 1/2″ from the edge. Once glue is applied, immediately slip it into the card in the center fold.

Bottom

Slip the Insert into the bottom of the card in the center fold until bottom of Insert is even with bottom of card. Press together until glue dries.

Assembled card looks like this from the top.

As long as they fold flat when the card is flattened, you can add 3-D paper objects to the outside or the inside of the card. (See paper flowers and butterflies on outside and folded butterfly on inside). Keep all designs or paper objects within the 4 1/2″ X 5 1/2″ size so that it fits in a standard size A-6 envelope.

My card features Layers of Color Backyard Birds, Merci Bouquet and Butterfly Collection art stamp sets. I’ve also included a music sheet from a 1969 Psalter (scripture inspired music). The theme of my card fits the verse, Luke 12:27 – 28 . The words of this song include:

“He loves me, yes, he loves me, for I am His and no good thing will He withhold. Consider the lilies they toil not nor spin, they bask in God’s sunshine, they drink in God’s rain. If God cares for them in such marvelous ways, how much more He cares for me.”

This card and tutorial are original designs created by me to bless you. Please respect this gift and use it only for personal gain. If you would like to share this project, please link back to this post. Thank you! I enjoyed creating it for you!

May God bless you with layers of color!

Wow, Laura, this is a masterpiece. Thanks for all the deets and I love this shape of card. I can’t tell you what an honor it was for me to do what I could to promote your fabulous company, and have the privilege of stamping with your designed stamps. I wasn’t familiar with them a month ago, and now I love them. The free digis were so generous of you to share with everyone over the weekend and I hope lots of people viewed some of my cards making use of them over on SCS and on my blog. Much love to you and I know God will bless you in your business. You are a very talented lady and am glad our paths crossed through our mutual Christian sister, Linda!!

Gosh Laura, how fabulous is this little house. The music frame, the wonderful flowers colors and the fun bird just make it perfect. As always your talent shines!!! smiles

I like this method better than the SplitCoast shadowbox tutorial – I never liked the side pieces sticking out on their version! Plus, what’s not to love about a butterfly covered birdhouse!!

I love your birdhouse. Your shadow box is awesome. Thanks for the tutorial. When I was making my shadow box I was thinking along the same lines of God’s provision. I am going to have to make a birdhouse shadow box now.

Wow! What a gorgeous card! Thank you for sharing the pattern with us! I’m going to have to take a try this week at this style! Thanks for sponsoring our challenge this week at SSCC!
Blessings!
